THE RISE OF AVOCADO: THE BEST PLACES TO GET SMASHED IN CARDIFF
The avocado: fruit, Instagram star and brunch favourite
From kale to coconut oil, one thing is for certain, ‘wellness culture’ is on the rise and one of the most insta-worthy millennial food choices (boasting over 6 million posts to date on Instagram) is the humble avocado. The fleshy fruit that people ignored for decades has risen in popularity over the past few years. Promoted by celebrities, food bloggers and chefs for its raft of health benefits (including the fact that it contains more potassium than a banana) the avocado has become the UK’s eighth biggest selling fruit.
Whether it’s raw avocado and cocoa puddings, avocado lattes (yes they are a thing), a substitute for butter in baking or used to create the traditional guacamole dip – avocados have become a big part of our current foodie culture.
Available in a variety of reputable eateries across Cardiff, one of the most popular ways of eating the fruit is smashed on toasted artisan bread. So, we thought we would take a look at what the city has to offer with the help of loyalty app, Memberoo.
With a number of stores established across the city, KIN+ILK offers some of the best wine, coffee, craft beer and food in Cardiff. Its avocado muffin is a little delight served with lime, tomato and onion on an English muffin, with two poached eggs thrown in for good measure. Popularity of the avocado fruit doesn’t seem to be slowing down as its sales continue to grow in 2017 and so does the nation’s love of it, with consumers spending almost £50million more on it in 2016, with demand growing by 30%. Not only does it taste delicious but avocado is seriously beneficial to your health, with the monounsaturated fats able to trigger your body to combat hunger, leaving you fuller for longer and less likely to reach for those unhealthy snacks.
