#SUMMERINTHEDIFF – YOUR MEMBEROO GUIDE
It’s summer in the diff
We’ve had heatwaves, storms, torrential rain. In other words a typical British summer.
With the kids off, and days out at a premium, the Memberoo crew have endeavoured to create some fun guides for all those curious travellers who want to find cool places and #getrewarded in their local area.
Here are our Memberoo highlights in the ‘Diff.
Picture the scene… you’ve had a great nights sleep, with energy oozing out of you. You want an exciting day, full of luxuries, fun and great deals. That’s one of the many things Memberoo can do for you. App in hand, let’s go on a journey and see some of the finest things the great places of Cardiff have to offer. We begin at the beginning.
Breakfast in the diff
Cardiff has many fantastic places for coffee and whatever type of breakfast you are craving that particular day. From full englishes (welsh’s?) , to pastries, smoothies, and even crepes.
Our personal highlight?
A classic venue to the locals, there is a reason why servinis has been around for a over 50 years.
With a team boasting over 45 years experience, they offer freshly cooked food in a cosy, comfortable environment. This is honest food done well, sold at an affordable price.
For the longest time Servini’s had a reputation as the unabashedly old fashioned greasy spoon where you could get an inexpensive, no frills meal with matching decor.
All that changed recently when new ownership took hold and were adamant on making changes. These changes include a fresher look, more akin to a hip vegan cafe than a classic builders tea and a fry up kind of place, changes such as pallets stuck on one of the walls and astroturf covered stools. but regular customers won’t mind as their brilliant Welshcakes are still pride of place at the counter.
Servinis was always been renowned for it’s mix of all day breakfast items (including fry ups and posher egg dishes), baguettes, sandwiches and toasties, as well as diner/greasy spoon classics such as corn beef hash (yes, you read that right.)
As for drinks, Servinis serve the full compliment of tea and coffee you would expect, as well as a healthy (pardon the joke) selection of soft drinks and booze, including beers, wines and even breakfast cocktails.
A true Cardiffian way to start the day.

Lunch in the diff
After you have burnt off your breakfast, (whether it was playing rugby, getting mauled by Darleks at the Doctor Who exhibition, or some other activity.) It hits midday and you need to refuel. We found somewhere really cool.
Kin + Ilk (Pontcanna & Capital Quarter)
When it comes to Kin + Ilk, minimalism is the key.
Kin + Ilk say they are aiming to develop its venues as “distinctively designed and modern spaces” for businesses and freelancers to meet, as well as local artists, designers and photographers to exhibit in.” There is also an emphasis on local artisan produce. With both food and drink coming from local high quality producers.
It’s the kind of place that has plug sockets with inbuilt USB ports so you can charge devices even if you only have a USB lead with you. With their free WIFI this makes for a nice spot to relax and catch up with the latest on email, news, or whatever apps you need to.
In terms of food, the menu is a mix of classy sandwiches, savouries and sharing platters, with a real local/Welsh producer emphasis, tasty and ethical. The menu is full of delights from Trealy Farm, the Parsnipship (for veggie and vegan stuff) and Pontcanna based Old Billyio Smoked Salmon. Meat based savouries and the bread used in the sandwiches are from Keltic Artisan Bakery, a bakery based in Cardiff Bay.
For drinks they have a well judged selection of wine, with a Kiwi Pinot Gris and a French Picpoul de Pinet in the whites being highlights.
They also have a fine selection of coffees, teas and soft drinks.
Managing director David Davies, said: “We have a strong vision for KIN+ILK creating distinctively designed venues with great coffee, food and drink that brings together creative, business and entrepreneurial people to meet, eat, drink, connect and collaborate in calm and inclusive spaces.
“We want our coffee shops to host regular events and inspiring talks, to really engage with local freelancers, business owners and business leaders.”
It certainly is a breath of fresh air, and well worth a visit.
Memberoo reward highlight: ‘Free coffee, just for having Memberoo. Experience Kin + Ilk’s delicious blends.’
Treat in the diff
Halfway through the afternoon you may start feeling peckish, it happens. You are busy running around in the sunshine, you need something to cool you down right?. Well we have just the thing.
Fresh from their new TV star status (they recently served ITV royalty in the shape of Holly and Phil on This Morning.) Science Cream continues to be one of the most famous ice cream parlours in Wales.
Located in the popular Castle Arcade in the centre of Cardiff. Science cream have a tasty method for making ice cream which is pretty innovative. They use liquid nitrogen to instantly freeze their ice cream mixture, resulting in incredibly tasty, smooth, and refreshing ice cream, often in unusual flavours. Don’t worry, there’s nothing unhealthy about liquid nitrogen. In fact, science cream have a great range of vegan flavours.
The other nice thing is that everything they sell, from cookie sandwiches to milkshakes topped with peanut butter brownies and a flame toasted veggie marshmallow, is handcrafted in their little ice cream parlour in Cardiff.
The whole place is decorated like a science lab, filled with liquid nitrogen ‘smoke’ and everything is delicious. What more could you ask for?
Memberoo reward highlight: ‘Two for one on every regular ice cream purchase!, get twice the loveliness for the same price, only with Memberoo! ’
Dinner in the diff
It’s been a full day, you’ve seen a lot, eaten a lot, walked a lot (probably.) You need something fancy to round off the day. Don’t worry, Memberoo is here with the ideal place.
Nestled in the bosom of the Hilton hotel, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is the official hilton hotel restaurant, but you would be mistaken.
Situated neatly in between the hustle and bustle of the city centre and the university campus, Grey’s restaurant has a tasteful interior and excellent customer service. In their own words “a social haven of peace, a warm cocoon of simplistic style.” Yes, we can go with that..
In terms of Drinks, the sky is your limit. There is Pommery Champagne, gin cocktails including gin from The Cardiff Gin Company, Welsh spirits, craft beers and much more.
Food is equally diverse (Head chef Mark Freeman, is again a big fan of showcasing local produce.) With savoury treats including Grey’s Feel Good Salad (with golden and candy striped beetroots, quinoa), Cefn Mawr Farm Beef Burger in a toasted brioche with smoked chilli jam and Caerphilly cheese, Grey’s signature Lobster Club Sandwich, a full roast dinner in a tin, Sesame Seared Tuna Loin in an oriental salad with wasabi and Ty Gwyn Cider Steamed Mussels with Trealy Farm chorizo and baked ciabatta.
And we haven’t even touched on the desserts such as: chocolate gnocchi and a lemon risotto cake with elderflower cream.
I can see you salivating from here. It’s a beautiful location, a great ambiance, and delicious. A perfect way to round off the day.
Memberoo reward highlight: ‘25% off your bill, (Mon – Thurs), great food at a great discount, what more could you ask for?’
